New research(1) from Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance reveals that one in five (18%) Brits heading abroad on holiday in the next 12 months plan to go camping. The research reveals that 80% will remain on the continent and 20% plan to venture further afield. The preferred camping destination is France, with 42% planning to go there in the next 12 months.
The number one reason campers elect to pitch a tent is because of the experience it offers (25%). For other campers the lure is the price of this type of holiday (18%) as camping is often more budget friendly than booking hotels and B&Bs. Another 14% of Brits prefer the flexibility camping offers, being able to move around easily without having to worry about finalising an itinerary before heading abroad. For 5%, the thrill is in reliving childhood memories and the same number (5%) do so because their children prefer camping holidays.
David Barrett, Travel Insurance Manager at Sainsbury’s Bank said: “Camping can be one of the most cost effective holidays for families and, as our research reveals, there are many other reasons why it’s a popular choice. If you are planning a camping holiday, make sure you invest in a good quality travel insurance policy and if you are booking it independently, ensure it includes travel disruption cover as this could protect you in the event of any delays, cancellations or bad weather.”

While European destinations are extremely popular, Brits are planning to bed down under the stars as far afield as Mozambique, Vietnam and Western Australia.
David added: “It is important when going camping that people are careful to protect their possessions, for example, using a lock on your tent zip and investing in an alarm could help to warn off any would-be thieves. In the unfortunate event that you do suffer from theft or loss, a good travel insurance policy will insure you against the loss of these items.”
