Guilty, Casual, Saintly Or Green? The Gifting Traits Of Brits Revealed

When it comes to buying gifts for friends and family, people in the UK can rest assured that they have a clear conscience. Over half (51%) define themselves as ‘Saintly gifters’ who put lots of thought and effort in to the gifts they buy, according to new research(1) from Sainsbury’s Bank.

The research which looked at the gifting traits of people in the UK revealed that almost a  fifth (18%) identify themselves as ‘Casual gifters’ who put just enough effort into what they buy so they don’t feel guilty. ‘Re-gifters’ (5%) are those who admit to recycling gifts, and the ‘Guilty gifters’ (6%) are those who are left feeling guilty after they’ve handed over their gift.  Of those that have given a ‘Guilty gift’, the main reason cited for feeling guilty were because they hadn’t put any thought or effort into the gift (37%).

Simon Ranson, Head of Banking at Sainsbury’s Bank said:

“As we hurtle towards Christmas, gift-buying comes sharply in to focus. Even the most Saintly-gifters among us can feel rewarded by choosing a credit card which offers generous rewards, and a 0% purchase card can help spread the cost of Christmas. Making your card work for you by giving you rewards every time you shop is an important feature of the Sainsbury’s Bank card suite.”

A fifth (19%) of Brits say they will be putting more on their credit card this year than they did two years ago, with those doing so increasing their credit spend by almost a third (32%) on average. Of these, more than a quarter (26%) will be using their credit card to take advantage of rewards schemes such as Nectar points and cash back.

The main reasons given for increasing gift spending on credit cards is for the enhanced consumer protection (31%), taking advantage of interest free periods (27%), having more gifts to buy than two years ago (27%) and spending more on gifts than previously (26%).

According to recent research from MoneyComms(2) many rewards providers have cut the reward earned or ditched their schemes altogether due to cost pressures from the EU interchange fee changes. In this latest 0% credit card purchase market analysis carried out by Moneycomms only John Lewis (Partnership Card), Nationwide Building Society and Sainsbury’s Bank have maintained their reward rates of 2 years ago .

Sainsbury’s Bank’s Purchase Credit Card offers 0% interest on purchases for 28 months and 0% on balance transfers for 18 months(3) and has no annual fee. Customers are also awarded two Nectar points per £1 spent in Sainsbury’s and on Sainsbury’s fuel, and one point for every £5 spent elsewhere. And until 29th December, new customers who apply and take out a Sainsbury’s Bank Nectar Credit Card and spend £800 or more on Sainsbury’s shopping or fuel with their Sainsbury’s Bank credit card during the first 3 months from account opening will be rewarded with 5,000 bonus Nectar points(4).
